FILM: Fight Club

Marla Singer is the only female character in Fight Club the film and one of only two in the book. Filled with despair and self loathing, Marla is a key character.
Marla shouts to the police that the girl who lives in 8G used to be a lovely charming girl, but the girl is a monster bitch monster. The girl is infectious human waste, and she's confused and afraid to commit to the wrong thing so she won't commit to anything.'The Girl in 8G has no faith in herself,' Marla shouts, 'and she's worried that as she grows older, she'll have fewer and fewer options.'
There's an interesting write up on Marla's role in the book/film here. Her clothing in the film is really reflective of her personality and character, seen in one scene stealing clothes from a laundromat & taking them next door to the thrift store to sell, she appears to steal or buy her clothes from thrift stores but has an incredibly strong and quirky sense of style to match her personality which softens slightly as she becomes seemingly more vulnerable.
"I got this dress at a thrift store for one dollar. It's a bridesmaid's dress. Someone loved it intensely for one day, and then tossed it. Like a Christmas tree. So special. Then, bam, it's on the side of the road. Tinsel still clinging to it. Like a sex crime victim. Underwear inside out. Bound with electrical tape."
I love her mix of classic black Audrey Hepburn-esque outfits, furs, sequins & delicate chiffon bridesmaid dresses with dark eyeliner and wild hair. The juxtaposition of girly, glamourous and lavish with grungey, goth & dark is something that has definitely had a lasting impression on how I dress.

I couldn't write a post about Fight Club without mentioning Tyler Durden. His eccentric outfits featuring loud shirts, fur coats, leather and patent loafers, again, representative of his character. My favourite outfit of his is this one near the end of the film:

Anyone else share my love of Marla Singer? She's definitely one of my all time favourite fictional babes.

Sale scout

There's a huge sale on at American Apparel right now & being super skint, I got really excited when I saw that some of it was as cheap as £1! But I'm a sucker for a bargain and often buy things before actually considering how they would fit in to my wardrobe (in both senses of the word).

So I thought I'd pick out a few of my favourites and see how people have worn them before I make any purchases...

MAKEUP: Eylure Dylash

In the rush of doing my makeup, adjusting my hair, checking my emails and eating my breakfast on the journey to work, I always seem to forget to put mascara on which is a bit of a pain because I have very light eyelashes and it just looks odd against the dark eyeliner I usually wear.

I've been looking in to semi permanent makeup and wanted to try eyelash tinting for a while, so when I saw the Eylure Dylash kit in Superdrug for £3.75, I thought I'd try it out.

You can pick these up from Boots, John Lewis and lots of places online but I think Superdrug have it on offer at the moment because it's around £7 everywhere else. The Superdrug I went in to only had 'Blue/Black' but it comes in black, dark brown & brown too.

The kit includes: Dye & activator, protective pads, a mixing stick, applicator wand & (pictured below) a little tray to mix the dye in. You'll also need some Vaseline and wet wipes.

The application is quite straight forward:

Clean eyelashes
Mix dye cream & activation fluid
Cover area around eye/lashes in Vaseline
Dampen pad & place under eye
Close eye & apply dye to lashes
Keep eye closed for 5-10 minutes
Remove dye with makeup wipes.

The concave shape of the mixing tray makes it really difficult to properly coat the mascara wand, so I'd recommend finding something flatter to mix the dye in.
I also found it almost impossible to apply the dye with my eye closed.

I think it's just a case of finding out what works best for you. I was careful not to blink too dramatically and get dye everywhere, so having my eyes open during the development time wasn't too much of a problem. The instructions also say to do one eye at a time, which is obviously a good idea if you do intend to spend the 10 minutes development time with your eye(s) closed. If you don't, then you can probably save time and do both at once.

Left - before, right - after

My eyelashes didn't come out quite as dark as I had hoped but I was really pleased with how it tinted my eyebrows. It'll definitely save me some time doing my makeup in the morning, I might even manage to get it done before leaving the house!

Heatwave

Sunglasses - Forever 21, shirt - charity shop, swimsuit top - Floozy, shorts - Levi's, shoes - Dr Martens

Sorry about the bikini shots, but I got this one in the sale at Debenhams for £20 and it's so adorable I just wanted to share it!

It's been such a beautiful week! We spent a couple of days at Robs, his garden is so beautiful & he has a pool (!!) I live in a 2 bed terrace in the middle of Gillingham so a pool in the garden is something I've not encountered much/at all.

I'm wearing my DMs in 30 degree heat partly because they rarely leave my feet and also because I really need to get some sandals. Year after year I look and never find anything, I'm not a fan of feet and don't feel comfortable having mine on show so the options/styles are limited. There were some lovely ones at Topshop but alas I can't find them in my size :(
Maybe next year!

FOOD: Oreo Cookie Brownie Cupcakes

Hello!

Thank you so much to everyone that's reading/following/commenting <3 I really appreciate it!

I thought it might be nice to break up the stream of outfit posts with something a bit different. Rob found the recipe for these here and they looked super simple to make, so I thought I'd share this gem of a find!

All you need is:
  • One pack of cookie mix
  • One pack of brownie mix
  • One pack of Oreos (we used double stuffed :8)
  • Muffin cases

We only had to add water but be sure to check the instructions on the mixes you buy 'cause some might need extras like eggs or milk.

Then all you need to do is:

- Line a baking tray with muffin cases
- Mix the cookie dough & brownie mix in separate bowls (following the instructions on the packets)
- Spoon the cookie mix in the bottom of the muffin cases
- Add an Oreo to each & cover with brownie mix

The markings on our oven have worn off so I'm not sure what temperature we cooked them at, the recipe says gas mark 4 so go with that, and we left them in for about 10/15 minutes but just check on them regularly to see how they're doing.

I'd recommend adding a bit more water than suggested on the packets - just enough to make the mix a bit less sticky but not runny, as ours turned out a bit dry. I'd want to try them again in a tray rather than in cases, and maybe with different mixes. We just got the cheap Tesco ones, but I think it might be worth spending a bit more!

Shirt - Marks & Spencers, skirt - charity shop, boots - eBay, opal necklace - Debenhams

Sorry about the lack of posts! It was my birthday last week, I had some shirts to print for a friend's charity event, then work at the weekend, so it's been quite a busy few days!
Birthday was lovely though! I got the boots & necklace in the photos above, as well as lots of other awesome things, we went for lunch and had the biggest hot dog I've ever seen, then had a Chinese and a few drinks in the evening.

Now I've finished college I've got to stay productive and get things done. Lots of goals and plans for the coming year! I need to take my driving test, find a good stable job & try to get some new shirts made (I design and print clothing sometimes, more about that later though!).

I hope everyone has been enjoying the sunshine!

MAKEUP: Nail wraps

I've never used nail wraps before but saw these in Primark and I thought I'd try them out. There were 20 in the pack for 50p (total steal) and although the sizes were a bit off and they wrinkle a little when you put clear varnish on top, they still look really cute.

For anyone who finds them as much of an enigma as I did: you get a pack of different sizes and they work like some kind of sticker/transfer hybrid. You heat them a little to loosen the adhesive by rubbing them, peel the wrap off the sheet, place it on to your nail & then trim off and file the excess.

I'm not sure if it's the quality of these or down to my application, but I feel like they may have worked better on a base coat & despite a couple of layers of clear varnish, they're wearing off a little at the tips. I'll definitely be trying some others though.

There's tonnes of different brands & styles available, just a quick search and I found loads on ASOS, Boots, Superdrug, Topshop & eBay ranging from £1 to £10 but I'd definitely recommend getting some cheap ones first if you've never used them before.

Nail wraps

I'm really keen to try the L'Oreal ones (5th clockwise from top), and WAH Nails have done a collaboration with Models Own which is just a dream come true.

I've also bought some nail art pens and I want to try nail pearls, so i'll be posting about those soon too!

Anyone else had any nail art adventures recently?

Chatham High Street doesn't want me for a sunbeam.

Sunglasses & body suit - Forever 21, shorts & skirt - American Apparel, shoes - Dr Martens

I've been wearing this skirt a lot since I bought it, it's really versatile and goes with so much. I also like that whilst I'm wearing an ankle length skirt I can be a bit cheeky & wear short shorts underneath that I wouldn't normally wear out in the middle of the day.

Today I went for lunch with my mama 'cause it's my birthday tomorrow & she's working so I wont really get to see her. We went to a cafe that we used to go to when I was little & did a bit of pre birthday shopping (photos to come later as some of the stuff has been taken hostage til my actual birthday!).

Saturday 6 July 2013

Today I experienced my first day of Summer this year! I've been a vampire recluse so far but today I actually went out in the sunshine.

Sunglasses - Forever 21, t-shirt - eBay, shorts - Topshop, shoes  - Dr Martens
Rings (clockwise from left) :  Asos, China Town, Forever 21

I bought these shorts in the Topshop sale & I'm so in love with them! They're such a nice fit & the pastel pink & blue are two of my favourite colours right now, so I was stoked when I found them.
